EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process traumatic experiences and distressing memories in a safe, structured way.
It’s widely used to support those who have experienced significant stress, trauma, or negative life events, often leading to a reduction in symptoms like anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of helplessness.
EMDR uses eye movements and other forms of bilateral stimulation to assist in reprocessing difficult memories, transforming them from disturbing or overwhelming to manageable and integrated parts of one’s personal history.
EMDR therapy is built around the concept that the brain can heal from psychological trauma similarly to how it recovers from physical injuries. When a disturbing event occurs, it may be stored in a way that disrupts normal processing and leaves one feeling “stuck” or emotionally reactive. Through a structured eight-phase approach, EMDR helps "unstick" these memories, promoting healing by guiding the mind to reframe and reprocess experiences.
The therapist will guide you through a series of sessions that include phases for assessment, preparation, desensitisation, and reprocessing. By focusing on the traumatic memory while engaging in eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, the brain naturally begins to reprocess the memory, often reducing its emotional charge.
EMDR is commonly used for individuals who have experienced:
This therapy is highly adaptable and can be tailored to each individual's unique experiences and needs. It’s appropriate for those who may not have responded to traditional talk therapy or who find it difficult to discuss their trauma in depth.
